| HiWheel bicyclist puzzles police, but no tickets
Martin Krieg makes people smile when they see him riding his HiWheel bicycle, but police are often confounded. The bike Krieg rides is an antique with a 52-inch diameter front wheel. Krieg, who lives in south Palo Alto, has been stopped three times recently by police officers who wonder if his bike is legal. But he hasn't been ticketed yet. "I've been stopped three times in the last few months on my HiWheel for theoretically not being able to brake properly (I cannot reach the ground with my feet), for not stopping long enough and for not having proper lighting," he told friends in an e-mail. But, as he explains, the HiWheel is legal because it falls outside the California vehicle code definition of a bicycle that is chain, gear or belt driven.
Hitting a roadblock: profit vs. bike path
"All winter, how many bikes pass here? On a day like this, I see one or two. There are more pedestrians using the path than cyclists," Beverley Russell fumed yesterday. Russell, owner of an antiques shop on de Maisonneuve Blvd. W. near Lambert Closse St., and other business owners on the strip of de Maisonneuve between St. Marc St. and the old Forum say the bicycle path has put a severe dent in their profit margins since its construction began last spring. The path, which hugs the sidewalk on the southern side of de Maisonneuve from Berri St. west through downtown, opened in November. .

That being said, I believe that the new ultra-low sulfur diesel is the most underused real alternative to gasoline today, as we search for the ideal solution for the future of transportation fuels. The new diesel fuel, when combined with the new 2007 diesel engines, reduces green house gases by almost 20% per mile driven vs. a comparable gasoline engine. Anyone who believes that diesel engines are noisy, smoky and slow has not had the opportunity to drive the recent turbocharged diesels with Bluetech emissions technology. Diesel engines have become perfected in Europe over the past two decades, and in Europe today more than 50% of new vehicles are diesels. Additionally, beyond using less fuel to travel longer distances, the comparatively lower vapor pressure of diesel and bio-diesel fuels reduces emissions during fueling by more than half when compared to gasoline or ethanol.
Boarder slapped with hefty fine for sidewalk skating
HAYWARD Mason Francouer would have had to be driving a car pretty fast to earn the kind of ticket he picked up last fall for riding through downtown on a skateboard. The 17-year-old's first brush with the law happened after school one day. He was rolling down a B Street sidewalk when a police officer on a bicycle pulled him over and fined him $560. "I was going like 3 miles an hour and, I don't know, I got a ticket. It was kind of lame," said Francouer, a shaggy-haired high school senior who has been plying downtown on wheels since seventh grade. His parents were infuriated by the ticket, and his father, electrician David Francouer, took several hours off work to join his son in court. "We just thought it was kind of bogus," the teen said. "I don't mess up the sidewalk.
Clinton's confidence dwindles as aides face her campaign's possible ...
Obama is more than an empty suit. He has prospored only because so many people despise the Clintons. His position on most everything is identical to the Clintons' therefore the basic premise of most of his opinions have not been tested. His leftist view of the world just will not fly with most Americans. .
Bismarck teacher is suspended
I have a daughter in this age group who is very thoughtful, who is studying different religions because it is one of the most important decisions anyone can make, if the consequence for choosing the wrong one is what is depicted in this film. I could almost kick myself for sending her to bible day camps that actually taught this kind of garbage because it has caused her great panic over being wrong and sent to hell. Some kids may roll their eyes at movies like this and not pay it a second thought, but kids like my daughter could be scarred for life over it. My daughter does not play violent video games, and what other kids say in school is not the same as a teacher, being a person of authority, incorporating it into his teaching. Getting a child to believe that he/she will burn in hell for eternity because they picked the wrong religion, or was raised by parents of the wrong religion is the worst form of cruelty for someone who takes these matters seriously.
