Cyclists log miles, promote utility

It's February, but cyclists from the Green Mountain Bicycle Club are logging some serious miles. These aren't training rides or even tours through the countryside. Instead, they are logging what the club's Jim Brophy calls "utility miles."

Early in January, Brophy asked club members to give him a weekly tally of how many miles they ride for utilitarian purposes. He notes that the club traditionally emphasizes racing and touring cycling, and he wanted to show that the group can also advocate for "every day" riders. Brophy knew that several club members were riding for nonrecreational purposes and thought that the idea might inspire others.

There are rules for what constitutes a utility mile. For instance, a cyclist heading out on a training or recreational ride who stops at the general store on the way back to pick up a loaf of bread can count the trip to and from the general store, but not the rest of the ride.

Crisp morning air welcomed hundreds of students, alumni and residents of all ages in Old Town Fort Collins Saturday, as they gathered for the annual Colorado State University Homecoming parade. The sea of green T-shirts and CSU gear showed support for the football team and generated community support.

Festivities kicked off on Howes Street and Mountain Avenue, with the CSU cheerleaders, colorguard and marching band in-step with the thunderous echo of the drums.

Wake up Americans. Your rights are leaving. They're leaving slowly, they're leaving secretly, and while you have your money you won't care. But once that's gone what will you have left? Everyone needs to think about their priorities when we "elect" our officials, or we're all going to find ourselves singing Newspeak in no time. .

Al Gore, Sienna Miller, Happy Feet Green with Honors

Al Gore may be the most esteemed also-ran of all time.

The newly minted Nobel Peace Prize winner and upcoming 30 Rock guest star had to make room on the mantelpiece Wednesday for yet another honor for his work on climate-change awareness, this time an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Environmental Media Association, which he shared with Live Earth producer Kevin Wall.

All proceeds from Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis, the 24-hour, seven-continent spinfest that played host to some of music's heaviest hitters in July, went to Gore's nonprofit Alliance for Climate Protection and like-minded U.S. and international organizations.

Happy Feet, in which cuddly dancing-and-singing penguins mixed it up with greedy corporate fisheries and marine-life theme parks, was named Best Feature Film for its ecologically uplifting and informative message, while the episode "Wear," part of Sundance Channel's Big Ideas for a Small Planet series, took Best Documentary honors.
