The Amgen Tour of California returns Thursday to San Luis Obispo and Friday to Solvang, bringing with it top international bicyclists, worldwide media coverage, thousands of cowbell-equipped spectators - and a number of road closures.

The Tour of California, the nation's largest and most competitive professional cycling tour, is a 650-mile, eight-stage race, similar in format to the Tour de France.

The race, which began Sunday with a prologue time trial in Palo Alto, will continue south near the California

Thursday's fourth stage will be a long, scenic 135-mile ride along Highway 1 starting at 10 a.m.

Kaufman County sheriff candidate indicted on oppression charges

Frankum called it "dirty tricks" in January when a warrant was issued for his arrest in a separate case based on allegations that he had stolen police equipment from his former department.

Mr. Frankum, who was expected to turn himself in on Monday, did not return calls for comment.

David Montague, spokesman for the Tarrant County district attorney's office, confirmed Monday that a grand jury on Feb. 7 indicted Mr. Frankum on three counts involving two complainants, whom Mr. Montague declined to identify.

Mr. Montague said he did not know when the original complaints that led to the indictments were made or whether they originated with an agency other than the district attorney's office.

All the incidents allegedly happened between February and August 2006 while Mr. Frankum was employed by the Police Department in Pelican Bay, a town of about 1,600 northwest of Fort Worth in Tarrant County.

The West Marin Medical Center in Point Reyes Station is one of the things that makes present West Marin what it is for the rest of us. Dr. Molly Bourne has been one of the best things around West Marin. Not just because she is a really nice lady, but because she embodies what is good and true here in West Marin. She IS what medicine SHOULD be all about. She was always open to new ideas and added her creativeness to our need for health care. She cares and takes more than the proscribed 10 minutes allowed by Managed Care, per patient. She seemed to actually know each of us as a human being. She is/was a gift to West Marin. One we are losing.
Molly Bourne got broad-sided by Managed Care and the crazy reality of our nation's for-big-profit-to-stockholders health system. An excellent and caring physician is leaving us because the overall system of health care in this county is a travesty of unfairness to doctor and patient alike.

The second collection of Joan Crawford films is even better than the first, covering a wider range of her career and unearthing more than the usual suspects. The earliest of the films is the pre-Code "Sadie McKee" (1934), with Crawford climbing up the social ranks and having romances along the way. The latest film in the five-disc collection is "Torch Song" (1953), with Crawford as a bitter Broadway star who comes under the spell of a blind piano player. It's total, crazy camp and irresistible. In between, there are good entries that cover Crawford's prime, such as "A Woman's Face" (1941), about a scarred woman whose life is transformed by plastic surgery, and "Strange Cargo" (1940), a religious allegory co-starring Clark Gable. Finally, there's "Flamingo Road" (1949), with Crawford as a city woman who finds herself stuck in a small Southern town.
