| Three-way Onalaska mayoral primary Tuesday
ONALASKA, Wis. All three mayoral candidates in the Feb. 19 primary have extensive experience in different areas of city government.Mike Giese knows Onalaska as a newspaperman and a six-year member of the city council. Calvin King knows Onalaska as a 14-year city employee and building inspector during a time of strong growth. And Bob Muth knows Onalaska from 30 years on its police force and less than a year on the city council. They're vying to replace Mayor Jim Bialecki, who's retiring in April after eight years leading this city of 16,425. The top two vote-getters will face off April 1 for the $50,000-a-year job as the city's chief executive.Giese said he strongly believes in good government, which he defines as one that "serves its citizens well at a high level and at a low tax rate."A self-described fiscal hawk, Giese said it's important that city development contribute to the economic well-being of its residents, neighboring municipalities and county.Muth wants to bring his sense of humor, knowledge of the law and experience of listening to all sides of a situation before making decisions to the mayor's office.
Yick Fung Co., a Chinatown institution, will close its doors this week
Jimmy Mar, a 93-year-old with a keen memory, opened the green wooden door to the Yick Fung Co. in Seattle's Chinatown for one of the last times Sunday. His relatives walked past the store's English and Chinese name that appears in chipped-yellow paint on the front windows. Inside, they hugged one another, looked at the store's vintage items one last time as a family and stood under a large wooden sign in Chinese that means "togetherness." .

Car bomb kills long-sought Hezbollah militant
Car bomb kills long-sought Hezbollah militant Detroit News wire services BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Imad Mughniyeh, a senior but shadowy Hezbollah commander accused by the United States and Israel of masterminding suicide bombings, hijackings and hostage-takings that spanned 25 years, was killed by a car bomb in the Syrian capital of Damascus, the Shiite Muslim group and other officials said Wednesday. Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out the attack on Mughniyeh, a charge that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office denied. In the past, Israeli officials have rarely confirmed or denied their involvement in assassinations abroad. Mughniyeh was also on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists, and the U.S. State Department had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
Madeleine McCann, Shannon Matthews And Missing Child Protocol
Sue Carroll: Most of us won't have an instant recollection who Shannon Matthews is. After thinking twice, of course we all know she is the nine-year-old missing from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire. But what a terrible indictment of the media that, when a child has disappeared in Britain for over a week, her name doesn't spring to our lips, we don't know her school, favourite toy or what she was wearing when last seen. Shannon is as precious to her family as Madeleine McCann, missing for 300 days, is to hers. But where are the front-page pictures, campaigns, the furore? Would this be different if she was the daughter of two middle-class, mediasavvy parents? Not a working-class child from up North. THE SUN: "Marchers wants Shannon home" THE family of Shannon Matthews led a poignant candlelit vigil for the missing nine-year-old last night – as police admitted hopes of finding her alive looked “bleak".
Economic turmoil clouds VC firms' investment outlook
The open source category has already seen movement, with Sun Microsystems recently buying Sweden-based MySQL for $1 billion. Grotech will be searching for additional open source opportunities in 2008, Rainey said. At Nobska Ventures, a venture capital firm in Stevenson that invests in early-stage information technology companies in the mid-Atlantic and Israel, officials said the company will eschew hot trends when it chooses its 2008 investments, looking instead for "market-transforming businesses that are unique in their sector," said Chairman Charlie Moore. Nobska has made four investments since forming in 2005. The firm is still raising its first fund and is anticipating at least one exit from its portfolio in 2008, likely through an acquisition. Moore declined to comment on how much money has been raised for the fund so far.
Video: Training dogs to retrieve ducks on Sauvie Island
Mike Edwards of Molalla shows a training technique called "running the line." This video begins with duck hunting at the Sauvie Island Wildlife Management Area in January. The action moves to the field behind Edwards' house during a late-summer training session with Jen, his yellow Labrador retriever. Then it returns to Sauvie Island in winter, where Edwards sends Jen across the ice after a duck. -- Video by Steven Nehl .

It is not the SPEED that kills, it is the STOPPING, (the stationary object you hit could care less). Adding alcohol, all this adds up to is.... "IGNORANCE". Seen this too many times in the past. It breaks my heart to have to watch families and friends torn apart. DON'T MISS "THE NUTCRACKER"!Central Wisconsin School of Ballet Students Impress I had the pleasure of attending a couple of rehearsals for the Central Wisconsin School of Ballet's annual production of "The Nutcracker". In one word... WOW! This is a holiday treat you won't want to miss. If you didn't get to see our stories about the production on NewsChannel 7 you can watch them here on our website. Videographer Erik Cieslewicz really captured all the hard work and determination behind the scenes.
What Counts as an ‘Issue’ in the Clinton-Obama Race?
I will vote as though I don't have to worry about getting re-elected. 4. I will vote as one who is free of obligations to special interests that don't coincide with what I truly believe is in the public interest. 5. I will vote as though there are no cameras, I don't have to “posture" for sound bites, I can be myself and say what is true. 6. I will vote as though there are no consequences from the administration, other members of congress, or my financial contributors. 7. I will conduct independent research on issues, seeking out experts who have no political agendas, I will avoid sources known to “spin" facts, withhold information, or provide false information. I will make decisions based on fact and logic rather than dogma and political expediency. 8. I will demonstrate that I have the courage to say, “I was wrong" and “I changed my mind." 9.
