Keen told MPs that the risk of a nuclear accident was one in 1,000. One in a million is an acceptable level of risk internationally.

Health Minister Tony Clement said cancer patients in Canada and other countries were going without crucial therapies while Keen split hairs over safety issues. His cabinet colleague, Gary Lunn, whose natural resources portfolio includes responsibility for Atomic Energy of Canada, warned that "people would have died" if the shutdown had continued and dismissed opposition calls for an inquiry. Angry Liberal MPs said they'd be keeping an eye on the nuclear safety issue and wouldn't let up in their calls for a public investigation of the affair.

Lancaster boy beaten with bat over a bike 5:18 PM

LANCASTER, S.C. -- A 13-year-old boy endured a brutal beating, as a police report the details of how he was hit with a bat, punched in the abdomen, kicked in the side, rolled down a hill -- all because of a bike.

Detectives say his attackers could face some serious prison time.

"We had a kid that noticed his bicycle was gone from the front of his apartment," said Lancaster police detective Brenner Hartley.

So the 13-year-old boy went looking and found it quickly. His bike was behind his home with five teenage boys crowded around it. Investigators say the boy knew it was his bike because it's not like any other bike in the neighborhood.

"It was a bike made up of many different parts, it was blue, and it was a trick bike," said Hartley.

Truckee railyard project unveiled

A project that would double the size of Truckee's historic downtown has entered the public review process.

In the planning stages for several years, the ambitious "railyard project" would involve realignment of Donner Pass Road and relocation of the railroad's balloon track – a large circular track used for turning snowplow engines.

"It took two years, but Union Pacific has agreed to move the balloon track half a mile east," said Rick Holliday, developer of the 75-acre project.

Return of the Native

It wasnt so much the final product that inspired him as the act of creating it.

Shady graduated from the Lego set to household appliances, becoming a handyman around the house. By his teens, Shady dreamed of being an electrical engineer when he grew up. But a 76 percent on his thanaweya amma exam in 1993 doomed him to the faculty of commerce, English section, at Cairo University. We are victims of an educational system that virtually assigns careers depending on how well you can memorize and spit back textbooks during exam time, he claims.

But Shady is one of those people who dont mind playing the hand they are dealt and making the most of it. After graduation, he landed a cushy job as an analyst in a large financial consulting firm. He was soon disillusioned, however, complaining of being treated as a second-class employee by a demotivating and abusive boss who seemed to only respect made in the West degrees.

Hillary Clinton town hall meeting

Yes, I am in love. A gentleman who walked with my friend and I back to the car stated that he would remember shaking hands with her for the rest of his life. He said, "She is going to be the next President of the United States." That just sums up what happened yesterday afternoon on a cold, windy street in the West Central neigborhood. Not the Fox Theatre, but the 'hood. Spokane. Bless your heart, Hillary. Thank you.

Getting There: Interchange alteration aims to cut traffic backup

Question: Dan Norman thinks recent changes at the Interstate 405/Northeast 85th Street interchange in Kirkland, designed for safety, have left more confusion.

The end of the southbound exit ramp was separated: a right directly westbound on 85th, or a right onto the center of 85th and then a left turn from a center lane onto Kirkland Way. But there's still a question as to who has the right of way -- westbound traffic on 85th or vehicles coming off the ramp and turning right.

The state has removed a yield sign once posted on the southbound onramp from I-405 to 85th. "If exiting cars do have to yield, (the state) should make it much more obvious," he said. "In short, now there is still the right-of-way confusion."

When cars come off the ramp and sit at the light at 85th and 114th Avenue Northeast to go straight, it's also difficult for other vehicles coming west on 85th to get into the right lane to turn right onto 114th, he said.
