| Closure in Colusa?
After a few months, with no leads to pursue, Colusa County named her Jane Doe, and then buried her in a local cemetery. More than a quarter century later, the family of Nellie Cornman Flickinger believes Jane Doe is a mother of five who left her children with a promise on a spring day in 1979 and headed west. As he waits for scientific testing, including DNA analysis, the prospect of a match is as startling as it is gratifying, said Michael Nelson, one of Flickinger's children. "I can't sleep at all. It's terrfying. My whole past jumps up in front of me," said Nelson, who lives near Erie, Pa. Nelson, now 38, was 10 the day his mother left him and his four siblings at the Erie home of their grandmother. His mother said she was going to California with a man, possibly a military man, to right her life and eventually send for her children.

Busy Man: With Funeral Homes and Much More, Kenny Purcell Has His ...
Kenny Purcell comes from hard-working stock. Although he's the name behind Purcell Funeral Homes, that's not all he's involved in. In what little spare time the funeral services businesses in West Southern Pines, Laurinburg and Raeford afford him, Purcell and his family operate a limousine service, an insurance agency, fitness centers and an assisted-living facility. That workload keeps him running from before sunrise to well after sunset, but he's used to it. "I fill my day every day," he says. "At some point, we'll probably downsize, maybe the fitness centers and the assisted living facility. The businesses are going well, but we stay pretty busy all day, although the funeral business isn't as profitable as it used to be. We don't depend on it. The Lord and I get up and going by 3 in the morning and finally finish my day at about 9 or 10 at night." His busy pace is a family tradition.
Ban on smoking becomes Md. law
Ellicott City resident Carole Fisher was also there. A cancer and tuberculosis survivor, Fisher was a smoker for 25 years before she stopped in the 1970s. But doctors told her that she paid the price for her smoking when an aggressive strain of tuberculosis left her fighting for her life in 1997. "I didn't want my seven grandchildren to go through what I did," Fisher said, wearing a bright yellow "I'd [heart] a smoke-free Maryland" sticker on her lapel. "And now they won't have to deal with secondhand smoke. They can live a healthy life." Jane McConnel, Paula Lawry and Janet Pfeffer, health advocates from Talbot County who have canvassed the state over the past five years convincing Howard and Prince George's officials to adopt similar bans, were front and center at the signing too.
